Recycling cereal box liners

I've been looking into recycling cereal box liners and note that your US division says that they use mostly #2 plastic, which is recyclable along with plastic grocery/shopping bags. However, with a recent Frosted Flakes liner, I tried the test ("Does it tear like paper?") and found that it did; so, it is no recyclable. Can you confirm the above? What does it take to get companies (you included) to use the recyclable product?

Most of our cereal, cracker and waffle bags are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is coded as #2. This is the same material many milk jugs and white grocery bags are made of. Number 2 plastic is commonly recycled but the recycle symbol is not typically printed on plastic bags or liners.

To help people determine if the liner is recyclable, our company has started to print a special Plastic Bag - Store Drop-Off Recycle Symbol on our cereal boxes. We realize that most recycling facilities have not yet established a process for recycling cereal liners or plastic bags. However, many stores now provide recycling drop-off bins and will accept cereal liners as well as plastic grocery bags. Look for a bag recycling drop-off bin at a store near you.

  • I’m confused; is it necessary to wash or rinse cereal box liners?
a dusty cereal sugary haze is visible on empty box liners. recycled film is supposed to be dry. washing and drying a box liner sounds like a waste of water and adds some detergent to the waste water. supermarket recycling boxes are small and any-ole plastic is deposited. the landfill is doomed to get 99+% of this stuff. Lets get serious and use something else for cereal packaging
